Last I checked at best buy they were something like $300 plus $50 per mount... Are their cheaper alternatives? I want to get cameras for 3 cars, and have multiple views, obviously this adds up.

Have you looked at keychain cameras? The video quality is OK (720p 30fps) and they are very inexpensive, on the order of ~$20-$30 for a cam with a memory card.

Not sure if you wanted to run 3 cameras for 3 cars, to be used at the same time... but if you have a smartphone, why not just use that? I used to record with both a Contour and GoPro but eventually resorted to my iPhone 5. I find the quality to be just as good even without the wide angle lens, and exporting videos is actually easier (don't have to process anything. Can edit directly into phone and upload HD to Vimeo or YT).

Shameless plug but if you want I'll sell you either/both my GoPro HD (first gen, also has bacpac screen) and/or my Contour HD Roam. PM if interested =)

I love my Contours due to them being stupid simple. Just slide-n-go.

Rough edit of two Contours at once using RaceRender (stuipd simple editing program). No data. No music or graphics (yet): http://www.youtube.com/watch?nomobile=1&v=xbp7lsXOVb0

It's not on their website, but one of the guys on the Viper Alley forum posted a pic of the HERO 2 on sale at Costco. It even came with the wi-fi backpack and was going for $199.

I had a bad experience with a keychain camera a year ago - it would randomly stop recording and the video quality was horrible.. However, I found a few models on ebay that do 720p like you said that look a lot nicer than what I had previously. There is also a mod that will allow me to run a switch to the dash to start/stop recording. The particular cameras that can do this are $38 shipped (Its called the 808 #16), and the rest of the parts needed are $5 per camera approx (usb cable, 5v adaptor, microcontroller). Theoretically I can get three views - front, rear, and pedals - for $129. Not bad.

Not exactly a "cheap" alternative, but if you want a great camera with excellent user friendly features check out the Drift Innovation Drift HD camera.

Here's my review-

The best alternative with minimal cost (if you have an iPhone) for most of you will be this:

http://www.optrix.com

I have a demo unit for the iPhone 4s if anyone is wanting to give it a try at any of the NASA Texas events.

Just PM me before the weekend and I can set you up.
