I have received many questions about this subject privately, so hopefully the following explanation will help. New for 2012 and beyond, NASA FL will be offering a better licensing process for new racers than ever before. Specifically by offering "Competition Evaluation" programs at most weekends starting with Homestead in March. Anyone who doesn't currently have a NASA racing license (provisional or hard card) will probably need to go through this program before going racing with NASA Florida.

Basically a Comp Eval entry costs the same as a HPDE entry and involves a variety of competition-related activities. Track time for drills in HPDE4 on Saturday, track time as a rookie in a race group on Sunday, various tests and meetings and discussions with myself and/or our race director and/or a panel of experienced racers, etc. It's all based on similar programs in other regions. Get through the weekend with no issues and you'll have your provisional NASA roadracing license as well as one race day on file toward your minimum. We strongly recommend doing nothing but this on your comp eval weekend (i.e. not instructing or TT'ing) because the more you put into it, the more you get out of it.

You will need a 2012 logbooked racecar and all the appropriate safety gear. You will need to file a completed medical form and license applications/payment with our national office in advance. You will also need to please contact me for clearance before signing up for Comp Eval. I will want to see your driving history and any references, in as much detail as possible. I am looking for significant verifiable experience in HPDE with us or a directly equivalent group, particularly at the advanced/passing in corners level. TT experience is definitely good too (generally speaking you will at least need to be TT qualified in terms of experience before you are accepted into our Comp Eval program, see viewtopic.php?f=22&t=54352 for those minimums.) And if you are coming from another organization or program from which you have a race license but not equivalent seat time, it is likely that we will want you to go through a Comp Eval weekend as well, if not also join us for some HPDE time beforehand.

This doesn't mean we don't accept licenses from other organizations, or experience with other groups. It means everyone who wants to go racing with us needs to contact me with their experience to either be cleared to enter the comp eval program, or get a waiver to skip it and have a competition license issued, BEFORE SIGNING UP TO RACE. Someone with recent years of club racing experience elsewhere probably won't be expected to do the comp program... but someone with a 3 day Skippy school last month and nothing else will probably be asked to do some HPDE weekends first. As always, again, please email me your info beforehand because everyone is considered on a case-by-case basis.

Late edit/clarification: ALL NEW RACE LICENSING IN FL FOR 2012 AND BEYOND NEEDS TO BE APPROVED BY ME FIRST. PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR APPLICATION TO THE NATIONAL OFFICE WITHOUT EMAILING IT TO ME FIRST, THEY WILL JUST SEND IT TO ME - AND PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP FOR A RACE ENTRY OR COMP EVAL WITHOUT EMAILING ME FIRST. THANKS!

This is all to make better, safer, smarter, faster racers in FL. I am a product of this system in mid-atlantic myself so I can tell you for certain that it works. Please feel free to email me anytime with questions. Thanks!

Jon

i will be signing up for the March HMS event in HPDE and do the comp eval when deemed appropriate.

Great plan. It sounds very similar to the way I got my race license in the Mid South region last year while a little less formal than the Comp Schools that are offered in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic region.

Indeed. And down the road we would love to do 1-day "supercomp" schools (this is how I got my license in mid-atlantic, and was probably the most fun day I have ever spent at the track)... but obviously we need some Fridays on the FL schedule first.

In other words an SCCA Regional/National license holder would need to go through this program before they could race with NASA.

Probably not, depending on how much experience they have... everyone is considered on a case-by-case basis.

Folks, I'm not sure how I can make this any more clear. It's all over the website and it's stickied right here on our forum. I need to personally approve any and all new race license applications before they get to the national office. This is for safety reasons of course, so we're all sure that everyone racing with NASA FL has a suitable amount of experience and training. Thank you for understanding!

Congratulations to the five new racers who passed NASA FL's first comp eval program at Homestead this past weekend!

Mark Bivings
Jimmy Platis
Carmine Pace
Derik Royal
Ary Krau

Note: two of 'em took the course as a refresher, which we recommend for those who haven't raced recently.

Feedback from everyone was 100% positive, thanks again!

Jon
